Some Interesting Coffee Facts
|
1.) Coffee is the second most traded product in the world after
petroleum. World wide coffee production tips the scales at over
6 million tons.
2.) The largest coffee-producing nation, Brazil, is responsible
for 30 to 40 % of total world coffee output.
3.) It takes five years for a new coffee tree to reach maturity.
The average yield from one tree is the equivalent of one roasted
pound of coffee.
4.) While roasted coffee beans start to lose small amounts of flavor
within two weeks, ground coffee begins to lose its flavor in minutes.
5.) It takes about 2,000 coffee cherries to produce one pound of
coffee beans. Assuming each cherry contains 2 seeds, or “beans”,
it takes 4,000 beans to make up a pound of coffee.
6.) The only coffee grown in the United States is grown in Hawaii.
7.) The French philosopher, Voltaire, reportedly drank fifty cups
of coffee a day. This is no joke.
8.) When made properly, a 6 ounce cup of coffee has about 100 mg
of caffeine, slightly more than a single shot of espresso.
9.) Studies show that the human body will absorb up to 300 milligrams
of caffeine at a given time. Additional amounts pass through the
digestive system and provide no additional stimulation. The human
body dissipates about 20% of the caffeine in the system each hour.
10.) Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the coffee cantata in 1732. The
Coffee Cantata is lighthearted, as close as Bach comes to comic
opera, in which he pokes fun at both coffee drinkers and their old-fashioned
critics.
