French Press Coffee Maker

Every coffee lover that roasts his or her own green coffee should have a a French Press in their arsenal of brewing equipment. Brewing with one provides an intense cup without filtering out the very essence of the coffee that is contained in the oils, which are filtered out when using paper filters. To properly brew in a French Press, or "Press Pot" brewer, a course grind should be used. Just because it's "course", doesn't mean any old blade grinder will suffice! Use a decent quality burr grinder capable of creating consistently sized grinds. Another big advantage of using a French Press is that you have direct control of brewing temperature (195-204 degrees F) and brew time (2-4 minutes)

Press Pot or "French Press" Coffee Maker

8oz (1 liter) French Press coffee maker and 2 coffee cups.
$19.50

Brewing Tips:

  • Only brew enough that you can immediately use, or the left over coffee will become bitter (within 5-10 minutes).
  • Pour the coffee directly into cups or a decanter after brewing, or else you'll be extracting every last bitter tasting essence into the the liquid coffee (not good).
  • Particle grind should be coarser than used for drip machines.
  • Blade grinders are incapable of producing an even grind. Use a burr grinder.
  • Add hot water "just off boil". This will ensure it is at the proper brewing temp.
  • Use specialty-grade, fresh coffee. French-Press coffee makers are about as unforgiving as espresso machines when it comes to coffee bean quality and brewer cleanliness.
  • Typically, 2 minutes is a good starting point for brewing, depending on grind particle size. Experiment with adding brewing time in small increments (15 seconds-1/2 minute at a time)
  • Toss out the Super Sized Mug and go back to an old fashioned 8-12oz cup. Did you know that in the coffee world, a "cup" is defined as 6oz? Somehow they just keep getting bigger. You will find better quality tasting coffee if you use a smaller cup and refill as necessary;

Frothing Pitchers

12oz Frothing Pitcher with Handle
Sometimes it's nice to have a handle on frothing pitchers to avoid getting too close to the steam coming out of the wand. Can also be used as an ibrik (Turkish coffee maker).

12oz Frothing Pitcher
When whipping up one or two lattes or cappuccinos, it is best to use a relatively small frothing pitcher, such as this classic styled, stainless steel model. It is best to froth no more milk than can be used within a few minutes.

18oz Frothing Pitcher
This commercial quality stainless steel
frothing pitcher is ideal when making multiple cappuccinos or lattes. The extra capacity is nice to have to reduce time spent frothing the milk.
