Whether roasting or brewing, it is best to use weight (scale)
rather than volume (scoop) for the simple reason that coffee bean
density can vary by a significant amount. If you want to produce
a consistent cup of brewed coffee (water to weight ratio), it
is crucial to weigh the beans rather than use a scoop measuring
device. By the same token, creating uniform roasts time after
time using home coffee roasters requires that the same weight
be used. By the way, a recommended starting point for brewed coffee
is 10 grams coffee per 6-8 oz cup and adjust according to taste.
This handy little scale from the folks at Hearthware (makers
of the I-Roast coffee roaster) is both economical and accurate
to within 1 gram. This equates to 7 or 8 beans, which is more
than enough accuracy required for brewing or roasting purposes.
